Athens is bat country — the Tennessee River corridor feeds enormous colonies of Mexican free-tailed bats all summer, and some of them roost in attics. If you have bats, the calendar decides what can be done about it. Here's how Alabama bat season actually works.
Why bats choose attics
Bats need warm, dark, undisturbed cavities near water and insects — and a Athens attic in July is exactly that. They enter through gaps less than half an inch wide: where the fascia meets the roofline, behind warped trim, through gable vents, and along the ridge.
Colonies return to the same roost year after year. If your home hosted bats once, it will again — until every entry is sealed. One bat in the living space usually means a colony in the structure; they rarely travel alone.
Maternity season: the summer blackout
From roughly May through August, bat colonies are raising pups that can't fly. Seal the entries then and the mothers leave but the pups die inside — inhumane, illegal in practice, and a horrific smell problem. This is why reputable pros won't perform full exclusion in summer.
What CAN happen in summer: inspection, documentation of entries, and sealing of every gap except the active ones. Then, the moment the pups can fly in late summer, one-way devices go on the active entries and the job finishes. A pro who offers to 'just seal it up' in June is one to walk away from.
How one-way exclusion works
Exclusion devices are simple genius: a tube or flap over the entry that lets a bat push out but not grip its way back in. Over several nights the whole colony exits to hunt and finds the door closed behind them. They relocate — bats are stubborn but not sentimental — and the devices come off for final sealing.
The follow-up work matters as much: guano in the attic is acidic, soaks insulation, and grows fungus. Heavy accumulation needs cleanup, not just a sealed entrance.
If a bat gets inside the house
Stay calm and don't chase it. Close the bat in one room, open a window to the outside, turn off the lights, and give it an hour — it will usually leave on its own. Never handle a bat barehanded.
The one serious rule: if anyone was asleep in the room with the bat, or a child or pet may have touched it, call a pro and mention it — bats can carry rabies, and that scenario needs a health conversation, not just removal.
